World Cup successful anthems

With the World Cup already in its quarter final stage, it has to be said, the music score accompanied with the competition will be missed. The official song of the tournament is Shakira’s happy feeling Waka Waka, though there is another great song by Coca Cola, called ‘Wave Your Flag, by K’naan.

There is an official version of K’naan’s track, plus a version featuring David Guetta. The songs themselves have an African vibe to them, due to the tournament being held in South Africa. England’s best attempts at anthems were ‘Shout’ by Dizzee Rascal, and ‘Three Lions’ by Robbie Williams and Russell Brand.

Kate Perry’s new single is a hit!

Kate Perry, fiance to Englishman Russell Brand, has released her new single, California Gurls. In the video, Perry appears in a candy like universe, wherein Snoop Dogg, who is featured on the song, is the master (he appears almost like a puppeteer). Perry also appears naked at stages in the video.

The song has a very summery feel to it, with a catchy pop sort of edge to it. The song is controversial though, as some of the topics in it revolve around sex or sexual innuendos, although none our generation will complain, with how stunning Perry looks in video, as well as how well she sings the song.

Simon Cowell leaves American Idol

Simon Cowell said an emotional fair well to American Pop Idol last week. After 9 seasons Simon Cowell decided to leave the show and will be an executive producer and a judge on an American version of the UK’s hit TV show ‘The X Factor’ which is due to be launched towards the end of 2011. The American Idol show has seen ratings plummet in recent months and Dancing With The Stars has regularly received more viewers. Some have argued that Simon Cowell leaving American Idol will be the final straw for the show and it’s likely that viewers will follow the man that made the show so popular over the past 9 years and watch him attempt to make a success of a show that has brought him so much success in the UK. Bringing ‘The X Factor’ to American soil has been something Simon Cowell has wanted to do for a long time and many believe it will be a great success.

Popularity of dance music grows in US

David Guetta and Lady Gaga have woken America to the world of Dance music. America has been an extremely difficult place to crack for dance DJ’s over the years but since David Guetta has collaborated with the Kelly Rowland, Will.i.am, Akon and Kelis the dance scene has come to life in America. Lady Gaga has seen her pop-dance song releases become a huge success and the success of these two artists are paving the way for other successful European dance artists. The success seems to be down to younger generation’s interest in dance music. As you have to be aged 21 or over to attend night clubs in the US, it has prompted the younger generation to attend dance festivals. And as the dance scenes popularity continues to grow it will enable more US DJ’s to show their material to a wider audience.

Gorillaz offered Glastonbury headline slot

Damon Albarn’s band, Gorillaz, have been offered the headline slot at Glastonbury after U2 pulled out following an injury to lead singer Bono with emergency surgery taking place on Friday. Damon headlined Glastonbury last year with Blur and is said to be very surprised and also nervous following being offered the slot. The headline slot is Gorillaz only UK festival appearance this year and Damon believes the band will perform well and can step up to the mark even at short notice. Damon also stated that he cannot compare the Gorillaz performance to last year’s performance with Blur as they are two completely separate bands. The headline act will be at the start of the festival this year rather than at the end which has pleased Damon as he wishes to experience the some of the festival as a punter which he was unable to do last year.

Liam Gallagher names his ‘new band’

Liam Gallagher has called his new band Beady Eye. The singer along with his former band mates of Oasis, apart from his brother Noel, are writing new material and working with producer Steve Lillywhite who is famous for his work with U2. Liam and Noel Gallagher fell out last year and Noel announced he could no longer work with his brother. Liam stated that the band would be called Oasis if they could not come up with a suitable name, however it seems as though Liam was very keen not to keep the band name that saw him and his brother shoot to fame is the nineties. Any future success of the band under the original name would surely result in Noel claiming royalties, but will the ‘new band’ really come close to the success that they achieved over 10 years ago? Liam’s fame will definitely help, but many will think that their time has passed.

U2 pull out of Glastonbury

U2 have pulled out of the Glastonbury festival after the main singer, Bono, had to have emergency surgery to avoid the possibility of paralysis. Bono injured himself while preparing for their upcoming tour of the US and following the surgery on Friday he must now recuperate for the next 8 weeks. Bono and the rest of the band are said to be devastated. U2 were due to headline the Glastonbury festival which was due to take place half way through their tour of the US. The organisers are now trying to find a replacement act to headline the festival, however Dizzee Rascal is front runner with him being second on the main stage behind U2. This is not the first time the festival organisers have had to deal with the headline act withdrawing. Kylie Minogue and The Stone Roses have pulled out of the festival in the past due to illness and injury.
